It will be off the side of the canoe because there is no flat transom to mount the motor. I will be using this motor in fresh water only and for fishing on a lake.

Any trolling motor will do. Be sure to balance out the weight of the battery by making sure to put it on the center line. If it’s not even, the canoe will turn in that direction.

A 12V Motor Guide or Minn Kota. hand steer
Using a 12 Volt motor you will only need one ” DEEP” cycle battery. Make sure you recharge it after you use it “each” time it will last you longer.
As far as the thrust goes, you are going to have to kinda guess on that one according to how much current you will be going against and the canoe’s ” Total” weight when loaded.
But would think a 36 # or a 40# should do you nicely.
Here is a Link to Minn Kota’s Transom mounted Trolling motors that fit your needs, as you have described.

The smallest one Motor Guide makes in 12V is a 54# thrust, if you want to go FAST that one would work. . . LOL
Here is the link to Motor Guide’s Web page.

All this info is assuming your canoe has a flat transom area for a trolling motor. If not you will have to get an adapter that you can get at Cablea’s
Good Luck

We’ve got a Motor Guide w/ 30 lb. , thrust that is used on both our “Jon” and an 11′ raft and don’t have any problem with movin’ out, sooooo with a canoe she’s goin’ ta’ move a bit faster. Canoe’s can be trickie especially when a motor is involved, but just good common sense is the key factor. Any good brand name will do ya’, it’s just personal preference. The links that GoldenFeather gave ya’ are good tickets. What with you not havin’ a square back stern ya’ still want to go with a transom mount for mounting on the rear side of your canoe, which ya’ already stated. As far as batteries go we use an Optima “Blue Top”, mainly because they’re LIGHTER than conventional deep-cycle batteries. They’re a little costly, but well worth it!! One more thing you might consider is a battery power gauge ta’ keep up with battery charge. Link below is for Cabela’s and they have them. The one I use is the, “Tempo Power Battery Gauge” (hand held) for 15 bucks + S&H. Always nice ta’ know where your settin’ on your charge
